What Can You Do With a Private Pilot Certificate?

If you’re thinking about becoming a pilot, you’re probably wondering what life looks like after training. Once you earn your private pilot certificate, where can you go? Who can you bring with you? What does this certificate allow you to do?

We hear those questions all the time at Lake Elmo Aero, and they’re good ones. Fortunately, earning your certificate opens up more possibilities than many new students realize.

1. Fly Just About Anywhere You Want

A private pilot certificate isn’t limited to flying laps around your home airport. Once you’ve earned it, you can fly anywhere in the country, and even internationally with the right preparation. That means weekend trips to the cabin up north, a quick hop to Duluth or Rochester, or a longer cross-country adventure to somewhere new. Minnesota alone has an incredible amount to explore from above.

2. Take Passengers Along

This is one of the best parts for a lot of our students. Once you’re certified, you’re not flying alone anymore unless you want to be. You can bring your spouse, your kids, your friends, and pretty much anyone willing to hop in the plane with you. Many of our pilots use their certificate to turn ordinary weekends into unforgettable adventures.

3. Use It for Personal and Business Travel

A private pilot certificate can change how you get around for work, too. While you can’t fly passengers or cargo for hire without additional certification, you’re free to use your own flying to get yourself to meetings, job sites, or client visits. Instead of a long drive or working around a commercial flight schedule, you can fly yourself directly to the airport closest to where you need to be. A lot of our clients who train in our Cirrus SR20 aircraft do exactly this.

4. Operate a Wide Range of Aircraft

Your private pilot certificate isn’t locked to one specific airplane. Once you’re certified, and appropriately checked out, you can fly a wide variety of single-engine aircraft, from classic trainers to more advanced, modern platforms like the Cirrus SR20. Many pilots enjoy branching out and getting checked out in different aircraft over time.

5. Experience the Skies Day or at Night

As part of your private pilot training, you’ll complete night flying requirements, which means your certificate isn’t limited to daylight hours. That opens up an entirely different kind of flying experience, like watching the Twin Cities skyline light up below you. It also adds flexibility to your travel plans because you’re not restricted to flying only when the sun is up.

6. Keep Building Toward More

For a lot of pilots, the private pilot certificate is just the beginning. It’s the foundation you need before moving on to an instrument rating, which lets you fly through clouds and less-than-perfect weather, or a commercial certificate if you’re interested in eventually flying professionally. Even if you’re not chasing a career in aviation, plenty of our students go on to pursue additional ratings simply because they want to keep growing as pilots.

7. Join a Community of Pilots

Earning your private pilot certificate does more than open up the skies. It also introduces you to a close-knit community of fellow pilots. From flying clubs to fly-in events across Minnesota, there are plenty of opportunities to meet people who share your love of aviation. Many of our students find that some of their favorite parts of flying happen on the ground, such as swapping stories and planning trips.

A Few Things Your Certificate Doesn’t Cover

It’s worth being upfront about a couple of limitations, too. A private pilot certificate doesn’t allow you to fly for compensation or hire, so you won’t be able to charge passengers for flights or work as a commercial pilot without additional flight training.

Additionally, without an instrument rating, you’ll generally need to fly in visual weather conditions rather than through clouds. Neither of these should be seen as a downside so much as a preview of where your training can go next if you decide you want to keep building.

Liability Release

I, (PARTICIPANT MENTIONED ABOVE) voluntarily desire to take an airplane (collectively, “Aircraft”) ride, pilot an Aircraft, rent an Aircraft, and/or train to pilot an Aircraft (collectively, the “Activity”), as well as to participate in the associated activities including, but not limited to, boarding, deplaning and/or walking on the runway and/or around the Aircraft, etc. (the “Associated Activities”), with LAKE ELMO AERO, LLC (collectively, the “Company”). Such activities may result in bodily injury, death, and property damage. I understand and acknowledge that engaging in any of the above activities are purely voluntary and I have made the decision to participate of my own free will. I also understand and acknowledge that, but for my voluntary execution of this Release of Liability (“Release”), the Company would not allow me to be in or otherwise near any Aircraft or participate in any Activity or the Associated Activities.

1. RELEASE AND COVENANT NOT TO SUE. I, on behalf of myself, my heirs, successors, assigns, agents, trusts, beneficiaries, executors, administrators, guardians, and legal representatives (individually or in any group; collectively, “Releasor”), hereby exempt, release, acquit, forever discharge, and hold harmless the Company, their respective officers, directors, members, administrators, trusts, managers, agents, representatives, servants, employees, successors, and/or assigns (individually or in any group, “Affiliates” and collectively with the Company, the “Releasees”), whether acting on behalf of the Company, or individually, from any and all liability, claims, losses, payments, harm, damages, costs, demands, claims and expenses of every nature whatsoever (collectively, “Damages”), whether in contract or in tort or under any other legal theory, arising out of my participation in the Activity and/or any Associated Activities. Releasor further agrees not to make any claim against, sue, or attach the property of anyone or more Releasees for any bodily injury, death, loss, or damage to personal property, or other damages, including those resulting in whole or in part from the negligence of the Releasees or other acts or omissions of the Releasees resulting from my participation in any Activity and/or Associated Activities.

2. ASSUMPTION OF RISK. I am not required to participate in the Activity or any Associated Activities. I freely and voluntarily choose to assume all of the risks inherent in the Activity and the Associated Activities, including, but not limited to, risks of negligent conduct of others, equipment or aircraft malfunction, improper or negligent operation of Aircraft, including those risks resulting in whole or in part from the Releasees’ own negligence or unintentional acts, but excluding gross negligence or willful misconduct.

3. INDEMNITY AGAINST CLAIMS. Releasor agrees to indemnify, defend and hold harmless the Releasees against any and all losses, judgments, or damages, arising out of any claims, demands actions, causes of action, and/or proceedings of every nature whatsoever (collectively, “Claims”), including but not limited to attorney and legal fees at trial and appellate levels, which may be presented or initiated by any person or entity, arising out of my participation in any activity and/or Associated Activities, and/or concerning the enforcement of or legal challenge to this Release.

4. LEGAL. This Release is governed under Minnesota law, without regard to conflict of law principles. The exclusive venue for any action arising hereunder shall be in the state and federal courts located in Washington County, Minnesota, and the parties hereby consent to the jurisdiction of such courts. In any action relating to this Release, Releasor hereby WAIVES ANY RIGHT TO A JURY TRIAL.
